The Wall: Dinding Bandar art exhibition is a documentation featuring archived materials on the urban art of graffiti. It looks at the changing styles, methods and development of this genre as well as its potential in the creative arts industry and society at large. It presents a collection of archived materials covering photography and videography as well as the most recent masterpieces by the selected graffiti artists. This collection was initially recorded through social media-instagram with #magadmalaysia from 2015 to 2018.
The Malaysian Graffiti Artists Database (MAGAD) is managed by the National Art Gallery. It is an effort to record the development of graffiti and form a network between the institutions and researchers, galleries and agencies and assists in exploring the potential of graffiti art in the domestic and foreign creative industries.
This exhibition is a survey of the creative development of graffiti artists in the city whose concrete walls provide them a platform and space to channel their visual expressions. Graffiti art as an aesthetic expression to street artists and vandalism to administrators who generally see graffiti as a sign of urban degeneracy and destroyer of aesthetic norms. This conflict set aside for a moment. The Wall: Dinding Bandar invites us to stop and ponder on the wonder of this urban enigma. 26 local graffiti artists have been invited to show their works in a variety of surface; on paper, on canvas or on the gallery wall.
