LUBOK WARRIOR
Artist: Jamil Zakaria
Crashing water and flying fish, the installation is instantly captivating. Despite it being a still installation, Jamil Zakaria manages to display motion and aesthetic appeal in creating an artwork as a metaphor to the Malay proverb, ‘Ada Air Ada Ikan’, meaning where we live is the place we make our living; ‘Seperti Ikan Pulang ke Lubok’ and ‘Bondong Air Bondong Ikan’ both meaning one who travels far will eventually return home to his village.
“Lubok” reveals a relation between aspects of Malay culture and the artist’s self-experience, and the materials used. As you can see from the display, the fish begin from a place that transcends the water, intuition will tell us that gravity will eventually cause the fish to return ‘home’, i.e. the water seen in the installation.
